In Los Angeles, 14-year-old Sarah Becker disappears into thin air. Ex-cop John Zandt and FBI agent Nina Black are on the trail of Sarah's abductor, a man that Zandt has a terrible history with, a sadistic killer known only as The Upright Man. In Montana, former CIA agent Ward Hopkins tries to uncover the mystery behind his parent's death. Seemingly unconnected incidents happen hundreds of miles from each other.
